Job Description

A Safety Officer is responsible for creating, implementing, and overseeing policies and procedures aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of all employees and visitors in a workplace. This role involves conducting regular safety inspections and risk assessments to identify potential hazards, managing safety training programs, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and standards. The Safety Officer plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of safety and awareness within the organization, investigating incidents, and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. They collaborate with management to develop safety goals and objectives and ensure that best practices are followed consistently. This position requires excellent attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work calmly under pressure to handle emergency situations effectively.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety policies and procedures for the organization.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify and eliminate potential safety hazards.
  • Lead investigations into workplace accidents and near misses to determine root causes.
  • Manage and coordinate safety training programs and workshops for all employees.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and corrective actions taken.
  • Collaborate with management to foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans and conduct evacuation drills.
  • Monitor and evaluate safety practices to ensure ongoing compliance and effectiveness.
  • Advise on technical issues related to health and safety in the workplace.
  • Stay informed on industry best practices and recommend updates to existing safety policies.
  • Facilitate regular safety meetings and encourage open communication among staff regarding safety concerns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in a safety officer or similar role.
  • Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal safety regulations and compliance protocols.
  • Certification in occupational health and safety, such as OSHA or NEBOSH, is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess and mitigate safety risks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with employees and management.
  • Proficiency in using safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
