The Role

As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will have responsibility for assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care, of allocated patients, and the implementation and evaluation of these programmes, ensuring the delivery of high quality care to patients.

The purpose of this post is to consolidate previous learning and develop specialist skills in emergency medical care setting

The post holder is not required to be in charge, a Senior nurse supervision is always available

Permanent, Part time

Base location - Vale of Leven Hospital

Key Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of care with reference to patients.
  • Provides highest standard of care by using evidence-based practice.
  • Co-ordinates the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi -Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers.
  • Ensures effective use of unit/department resources including stores, supplies and medicines.
  • Provides teaching, guidance, supervision and support for unqualified staff and students where required
  • Assists the senior nurse in the development of unit/department based orientation and education programmes for newly qualified staff and student nurses and acts as mentor / preceptor as required.
  • Ensure ongoing personal professional development in line with speciality.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients relatives and other members of multidisciplinary team, to ensure that appropriate communication is shared and patients needs are met.
  • Ensure that all written documentation within the unit/department area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.
  • Reports all accidents/incidents/complaints involving patients, carers and Staff to the senior nurse and commence enquiries or documentation as necessary.
  • Will participate in unit/department and directorate audit activity where appropriate and assist in the development of evidenced based practice as required.
  • Is aware of, observes and adheres to hospital, organisational and national policies.
  • Works within the NMC code of practice and professional guidelines.
  • Ensure risks to patients and staff are identified through the use of the clinical Incident reporting system.
  • Participate in the identification of risk and risk management strategies Incorporating these, through nurse management, to the risk register.
  • To keep abreast of changes in Health and Safety Legislation and policies with particular regard to COSHH, Fire, RIDDOR, infection Control and Manual Handling.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • experience required in acute medicine or accident and emergency setting
  • NMC Registration Level 1
  • Agreement to flexible shift working and Internal rotation
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work without direct supervision but senior nurse always available.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Good Health Record

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
