The Opportunity
The SAP TM Transportation Management Senior Consultant serves as a senior-level advisor responsible for leading complex SAP Transportation Management (TM) transformation initiatives for enterprise clients. This role combines deep SAP TM expertise with strategic consulting capabilities to design, implement, and optimize end-to-end transportation solutions that drive operational excellence, cost reduction, and supply chain visibility. The consultant participates in pursuing client sales opportunities and working on bid & proposal efforts along with activities including configuration and setting up the SAP TM system, assessment of client business problems, conducting the analysis to solve the problems, administration of engagement activities while contributing to practice growth and innovation.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the successful delivery of the SAP TM module related deliverables in SAP and S4 HANA implementation, support, and upgrade projects to meet engagement objectives and budget
- Lead design workshops with the client and responsible for requirement gathering, solution design, fit-gap analysis, writing functional specification, system configuration, testing and cutover activities for both standalone SAP TM system and embedded SAP TM in S/4 HANA
- Design SAP TM system Integrations with other modules of SAP/S4 HANA (like EWM, SD, MM etc.) and 3rd Party system
- Provide functional and business process expertise to the project team, resolve TM related client s issues and mentor junior team members
- Handle various industry specific complex TM scenarios like shipper, LSP and carriers
- Work with sales team, write proposals, define SAP TM scope and effort estimation for the new opportunities and present SAP TM capability to the potential client
Skills And Attributes For Success
Technical and Professional Requirements:
- 8-10 years of experience in implementation, support and upgrade projects in SAP TM
- Must have good functional and business knowledge, worked in multiple E2E implementations, integration, testing and application support in S/4HANA embedded TM and SAP TM (latest versions)
- Ability to interact with other cross functional teams from modules like OTC, EWM for integration scenario
- Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills for co-ordinating across teams
- Should be able to lead workshop or working sessions with business
- Knowledge in ABAP and debugging would be nice to have
Core SAP TM Competencies:
- Comprehensive knowledge in all L3 aspects of SAP TM such as Order Management (Logistics Integration, Freight Unit, Forwarding Order, Freight Order, Freight Booking), Transportation Planning and Execution, Carrier Selection, Charge Calculation and Freight Settlement, Invoice Integration and Carrier Communication methodologies
- Proficiency in Master Data setup such as Resource Management, Locations, Business Partners etc.
- Deep understanding of SAP TM integration with SAP ERP S/4HANA logistics (SD, MM, LE) and embedded TM scenarios
- Expertise in Transportation Planning strategies: manual planning, Transportation Cockpit, optimizer-based planning (VSR), and automated freight unit building
- Proficiency in Freight Order Lifecycle Management, Freight Tendering processes, Subcontracting and Execution monitoring
- Advanced knowledge of Charge calculation, Freight Agreement Management, Rate tables and Transportation cost allocation
Technical Skills:
- SAP TM configuration and customizing across all functional areas (master data, organizational structures, profiles setup for Planning, business rules such as BRF+ conditions)
- Data migration methodologies using DRF, LSMW, SAP Data Services, or Migration Cockpit; system landscape design (Development, Quality, Production)
- Understanding of SAP TM on HANA optimization, performance tuning, and analytics capabilities
- Expertise in implementation planning, fit-gap analysis, SAP TM system configuration E2E, testing, rollout and post-implementation support.
Industry Knowledge:
- Expertise in logistics and supply chain operations across multiple transportation modes (road, rail, ocean, air, intermodal)
- Knowledge of carrier management practices, freight procurement, contract negotiations, and service level agreements
- Familiarity with industry best practices, benchmarks, and emerging trends (sustainability, real-time visibility, autonomous transportation)
Consulting Competencies:
Client Management
- Proven ability to engage with client and influence strategic decision-making
- Expertise in requirements gathering through workshops, interviews, and process analysis; translating business needs into technical specifications
- Change management and organizational adoption strategies, including training program design, communication planning, and stakeholder engagement
- Project governance frameworks, steering committee management, and escalation resolution
Solution Design
- End-to-end solution architecture spanning SAP TM, ERP or S/4 HANA, EWM, GTS, and third-party logistics systems (TMS, WMS, visibility platforms)
- Business process optimization using Lean Six Sigma or similar methodologies; identification of automation opportunities and efficiency gains
- Integration strategy development including point-to-point, hub-based, and API-led connectivity approaches
- Oversight of custom development (ABAP, SAPUI5, BRF+) ensuring adherence to SAP standards and maintainability
Leadership & Delivery
- Project and program management using methodologies such as SAP Activate, Agile, or hybrid approaches.
- Leadership of diverse teams (10-30+ members) including onshore, nearshore, and offshore resources across functional and technical disciplines
- Quality assurance practices including test strategy development, UAT coordination, cutover planning, and post-go-live support
- Risk management, issue resolution, and proactive communication to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery
To qualify for the role, you must have
- Degree in Engineering or MBA in Supply Chain Area.
- Desired to have SAP certification on SAP TM.
- Having experience of working in integration area of SAP TM and other areas.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in SAP TM.
