Job Summary / Main Purpose

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design, development, and continuous improvement of transformer components and assemblies. The role involves creating reliable mechanical designs, supporting manufacturing teams, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The incumbent will collaborate with cross-functional teams including production, quality, and R&D to enhance product performance, optimize processes, and support innovation within the mechanical engineering domain.

Key Responsibilities & Key Result Areas

Mechanical Design & Drafting:

Develop mechanical designs and detailed drawings of transformer components ensuring structural integrity, manufacturability, and performance.

Design Validation & Analysis

Conduct mechanical calculations, simulations, and design reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with engineering standards.

Manufacturing Support

Provide technical support to production teams, assist in resolving mechanical issues, and optimize manufacturing processes to improve quality and efficiency.

Material Selection

Evaluate and recommend appropriate materials to enhance product reliability, durability, and cost-effectiveness.

Compliance & Standards

Ensure designs meet relevant industry regulations and standards (IEC, IEEE, IS, etc.).

Documentation & BOM Preparation

Prepare technical documents, BOMs, specifications, and design reports for assigned projects.

Vendor Coordination

Coordinate with suppliers for mechanical components, ensuring specifications and quality requirements are met.

Failure Analysis & Troubleshooting

Support investigations into mechanical failures, identify root causes, and recommend corrective measures.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with electrical design, production, and quality teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

Stay updated on new technologies and contribute to innovation initiatives in transformer mechanical design.

Core Competencies

Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles related to transformers and heavy electrical equipment.

Proficiency in CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor 3D, or equivalent.

Understanding of materials, thermal behavior, and structural integrity of transformer components.

Ability to perform mechanical calculations and simulations.

Good problem-solving and analytical skills.

Understanding of compliance requirements and industry standards.

Effective communication and coordination skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

3–6 years of experience in mechanical design within transformer manufacturing or the power industry.

Experience in drafting, material selection, and supporting manufacturing processes.

Familiarity with transformer industry standards and compliance requirements.

Hands-on experience with mechanical design tools and engineering documentation.
