Systems Engineer Site Reliability Engineering

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2 years of experience with programming in one or more programming languages.
• 2 years of experience working with administration (e.g. filesystems, inodes, system calls) or networking (e.g. TCP/IP, routing, network topologies and hardware, Software Defined Networking).
  
  

Preferred qualifications:

• Masters degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
• 2 years of experience designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting distributed systems.
  
  

About the jobSite Reliability Engineering (SRE) combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. SRE ensures that Googles services—both our internally critical and our externally-visible systems—have reliability, uptime appropriate to users needs and a fast rate of improvement. Additionally SRE’s will keep an ever-watchful eye on our systems capacity and performance.

Much of our software development focuses on optimizing existing systems, building infrastructure and eliminating work through automation. On the SRE team, you’ll have the opportunity to manage the complex challenges of scale which are unique to Google, while using your expertise in coding, algorithms, complexity analysis and large-scale system design.

Responsibilities

• Engage in the complete service life-cycle, encompassing inception, design, development, operation, and continual refinement.
• Support services pre-launch through activities such as system design consultation, development of software platforms and frameworks, capacity planning, and formal launch reviews.
• Contribute to the sustained development of our services, ensuring they operate with reliability, minimizing operational toil. Maintain live services by measuring and monitoring availability, latency, and overall system health metrics.
• Implement incident response procedures to guarantee services consistently meet their defined Service Level Objective (SLOs).
• Collaborate with partner teams to identify risks within our corporate systems and develop solutions to simplify or mitigate adverse impacts on Googler productivity or business processes. Seek opportunities to apply emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), to address traditional system engineering challenges in effective ways.
