Microsoft is a highly innovative company that collaborates across disciplines to produce cutting edge technology that changes our world.  The Azure Silicon Cloud Hardware and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) team is seeking a highly motivated hardware systems engineer to work in a team of other hardware and software developers to create systems and modules to be deployed in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud.  Microsoft provides ample opportunities for developers to have an impact on products that touch the lives of millions of users daily, in a cutting-edge public cloud environment.

The Cloud Hardware & Systems Engineering (CHSE) is responsible for expanding Microsoft’s Cloud Infrastructure to enable Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. The CHSE team is instrumental in delivering world class and innovative hardware at scale to ensure a high-quality experience to the millions of Microsoft Azure customers.

As a Systems Engineering team member, you will play a key role in developing and validating hardware systems for Azure Cloud. This position requires engineers with a passion for software-driven hardware validation and automation. You will work closely with senior engineers, contributing to both hands-on hardware validation and the development of automation frameworks to accelerate quality and reliability.  This is an opportunity to leverage and grow your existing hardware validation experience and provide innovative E2E hardware solutions to Microsoft Cloud.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in concept design discussions and assist in gathering node/rack system-level requirements for cloud hardware solutions.
  • Support cross-functional teams in clarifying interfaces and providing feedback for future design improvements. 
  • Assist in developing and executing test cases for hardware validation, including automation of test flows in collaboration with software engineers (Python, PowerShell, or similar).
  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks to streamline validation and reporting. 
  • Support issue triage, debugging, and resolution for hardware and firmware, leveraging automation to accelerate root-cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with internal design teams, ODMs, and other stakeholders to support validation plans for new technologies and features.
  • Document test plans, automation workflows, and validation results for knowledge sharing and continuous improvement
  • Review validation coverage and publish plan vs. progress reports as part of the learning process
  • Demonstrate curiosity about customer needs and apply a customer-driven mindset to assigned features
  • Communicate progress and blockers effectively, ensuring transparency and collaboration

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
  • 2–3 years of experience in server systems/platforms design, validation, or automation
  • Hands-on experience developing automation scripts or tools for hardware validation (Python, PowerShell, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with integrating software and hardware for test automation, data collection, and reporting.
  • Basic understanding of server hardware architecture, firmware, and OS interfaces.
  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills, especially in automated test environments.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in evaluating off the shelf OEM hardware designs, HW/FW/OS interactions.
  • Exposure to device drivers, hardware subsystem interactions, and performance benchmarking tools.
  • Familiarity with networking, power, and remote management protocols.
  • Understanding how standard server interfaces, such as PCIe, SATA, and memory, work with their respective software stacks.
  • Familiarity of secure boot, attestation, FW update & recovery on server platform architectures.
