Job Description

Overview

The Virtualization Core Platform Hypervisor team is seeking a highly motivated software engineer to contribute to foundational components of the Microsoft virtualization stack. The role involves systems-level design and coding across areas such as kernel, hypervisor, and firmware. Millions of users interact with Hyper-V each day, and it serves as the backbone of Microsoft’s cloud and online properties, including Azure, supporting millions of virtual machines that deliver services used worldwide.

This team plays a central role in Microsoft’s technical strategy, driving advancements in datacenters and cloud technologies through classic virtualization and new investments in lightweight containers. The work also includes enabling new capabilities on Windows desktop systems for mobile application development and security, as well as supporting innovation across multiple platforms such as Linux and contributing to Open Source projects. Engineers will collaborate closely with Microsoft’s silicon partners to enable new hardware features and advance performance, reliability, and security.

Candidates with experience in virtualization technologies are welcome, and those without such experience are encouraged to bring their existing skills and grow into virtualization specialists. The team is responsible for the operating systems that power Azure, Microsoft’s Linux operating system (OS), Windows Client, Xbox, and the Windows Server ecosystem. These systems support all Microsoft cloud businesses and billions of customers globally. Excellence in systems software is essential to improving reliability, increasing competitiveness by reducing cost of goods sold (COGS), and delivering new features and capabilities that enhance customer experiences.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
