Software Engineer II - Progress 4GL

About The Role

MRI Software is seeking a Software Engineer (Progress 4GL / OpenEdge) to join our product development team. As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, enhancing, testing, and maintaining business‑critical applications built on Progress 4GL/ABL and OpenEdge throughout the Software Development Lifecycle. You should have a strong passion for backend development, problem solving, and system optimization, along with an eagerness to learn and continuously improve your technical skills. We are looking for a collaborative team player who is comfortable sharing ideas, participating in discussions, and working closely with cross‑functional teams.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Develop, enhance, and maintain applications using Progress 4GL/ABL and OpenEdge to a high technical standard.
• Understand business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
• Analyze existing systems and optimize code for performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Debug and resolve application issues in a timely and efficient manner.
• Follow established development processes including source control, branching strategies, and testing practices.
• Actively troubleshoot production and support issues that require in‑depth technical analysis.
• Collaborate closely with QA, business analysts, and other developers to ensure high‑quality deliverables.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to development standards and best practices.
• Take part in team rituals such as stand‑ups, sprint planning, demos, and retrospectives.
• Participate in cross‑team activities including knowledge sharing and documentation.
• Document technical designs, processes, and solutions clearly and accurately.
• Build strong working relationships with other teams across the product development organization.
  
  

Candidate Requirements

• 4+ years of hands‑on experience developing applications using Progress 4GL/ABL and OpenEdge.
• Strong knowledge of Progress RDBMS and database design concepts.
• Experience with AppServer, WebSpeed, or OpenEdge GUI/CHUI.
• Familiarity with REST APIs, SOAP services, or integration frameworks.
• Good understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
• Strong debugging, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Experience following coding standards, documentation practices, and version control processes.
