Director, Cloud Engineering
The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Director of AWS Cloud Engineering, you will lead our cloud strategy, architecture, and operations with a strong focus on scalability, security, compliance, and performance. You will drive our application adoption and optimization of AWS services, ensuring our platforms meet the unique demands of healthcare applications, regulatory requirements, and mission-critical workloads.
The ideal candidate is both visionary and execution-focused - comfortable defining long-term strategy, building high-performance engineering teams, and partnering with business and product leaders to deliver secure, reliable, and cost-effective cloud solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Own the enterprise AWS cloud strategy, architecture, and operational roadmap.
- Partner with product, engineering, and security leaders to ensure cloud platforms meet healthcare, regulatory, and business needs.
- Drive cloud innovation and adoption of AWS capabilities to improve agility, cost efficiency, and scalability.
Cloud Architecture & Operations
- Oversee design and deployment of secure, highly available, and compliant AWS-based infrastructure.
- Ensure infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and automation best practices (CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK) are embedded across the organization.
- Establish robust disaster recovery, high availability, and performance optimization frameworks.
- Optimize cloud spend through effective cost governance and resource utilization strategies.
Healthcare & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all AWS environments meet or exceed HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and other applicable compliance frameworks.
- Lead security and privacy-by-design practices across cloud engineering initiatives.
- Collaborate with compliance and legal teams on regulatory audits, certifications, and attestations.
Team Leadership & Development
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing cloud engineering team.
- Promote a culture of innovation, learning, and operational excellence.
- Drive professional growth opportunities for engineers in AWS specialization areas.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and assess their applicability to enhance the company’s offerings.
- Establish processes for evaluating and adopting new tools, frameworks, and methodologies.
- Strategically retire technical debt
Qualifications
Your Skills and Expertise
- Bachelor’s degree and 10 years in infrastructure, cloud engineering, or platform engineering
OR
- Master’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field and 7 years in infrastructure, cloud engineering, or platform engineering
- 7 years of experience managing direct reports (hiring, performance reviews, etc.)
- 5 years experience leading enterprise-scale AWS architecture, migration, and optimization efforts.
- 5 years experience delivering mission-critical workloads in regulated industries; healthcare experience strongly preferred.
- 5 years in AWS services, including EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, S3, RDS/Aurora, DynamoDB, CloudFront, API Gateway, CloudWatch, and IAM.
- Familiarity with hybrid cloud/on-prem integrations and data platforms.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include
- Deep knowledge of IaC, CI/CD, Observability DevOps tooling, and cloud-native design patterns.
- Experience in container orchestration (EKS, ECS, Kubernetes) and serverless architectures.
- Familiarity with healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7) and security requirements.
- Strong financial governance skills for AWS cost optimization.
