Job Description

We are looking for a Lead UI-UX Designer who is passionate about tackling hard problems in HCI, such as: How can an interface teach a child to read, when the child cannot yet read the instructions?

THE ROLE: WHY THIS ISNT A STANDARD UX JOB

You’re not here to deliver pixel perfection. You’re here to shape the future of learning.

To succeed at Ei, you must possess a rare duality:

1. The Heart of a 5-Year-Old: You must see the screen through the eyes of a distracted, frustrated, or curious child. You understand that for a student, a confusing button isnt just a friction point; it’s a reason to give up on math forever.

2. The Mind of a 50-Year-Old: You must possess deep critical thinking and maturity. You understand constraints, you respect pedagogy, and you know that "gamification" isnt just adding badges; its about designing intrinsic motivation systems that respect the learner. You will mentor a team of designers to build the next generation of adaptive learning interfaces, moving beyond ‘point-and-click’ into the future of voice, gesture, and perhaps even AR-driven learning that makes the best use of tech and the world around them

What you will do:

1. Define the Future of Learning Interfaces

• Push the HCI Boundary: We want to move beyond standard patterns. You will explore how voice, touch, and adaptive feedback can create a learning loop that inherently feels like magic.

• Design for the ‘Zone of Proximal Development’: You will design experiences that keep students in the ‘Goldilocks zone’; not too hard, not too easy. You will visualize complex data and transform it into actionable prompts that empowers teachers to intervene at the exact right moment.

2. Radical Empathy & Research

• Be the Student: You will rigorously test your designs not just in Figma, but in the field. You will watch students struggle with your UI and treat every moment of confusion as a personal challenge to solve.

• Simplify the Complexity: You will take dense pedagogical requirements from our learning scientists and translate them into intuitive, delightful, and invisible interfaces.

3. Leadership & Critical Rigour

• Mentor, Dont Just Manage: You will raise the bar for the design team, going beyond reviewing pixels by examining the thinking behind the pixels. You will guide your team to defend their decisions with logic, data, and behavioural psychology.

• The ‘Why’ Over the ‘What’: You will ensure every toggle, colour, and transition serves a learning purpose, eliminating anything that interferes with it.

4. Systems Scaling

• Build the Machine: You will evolve our Design System to ensure that as we scale to 100x users, our experience remains consistent, accessible, and high-quality across web, mobile, and low-bandwidth environments.

The Experience:

• 4+ Years of Deep UX Work: You have a portfolio that shows messy problems solved elegantly. We care less about ‘Dribbble-worthy’ visuals and more about simplifying complex flows, systems thinking, and behavioural change.

• Leadership DNA: You have experience (or a strong aptitude) and are passionate about guiding other designers, critiquing work with kindness and precision, and elevating the teams output. The Mindset:

• You Think Critically: When someone says “lets use a modal,” you ask, “why?” You understand cognitive load. You know that a user has a limited ‘attention budget’, and you refuse to spend it on bad UI.

• You Are a Shapeshifter: You can discuss API constraints with engineers at 10 AM, debate font hierarchy with UI designers at 12 PM, and empathize with a rural school teacher at 2 PM.

• You Are Mission-Obsessed: You arent looking to sell ads or optimize checkout flows. You want to build the tools that the next generation of Einsteins and artists will use to discover their potential.
