As an Electric Power Lab Specialist, you will play a crucial role in conducting research and development activities related to electrical power systems. You will work in a collaborative environment to innovate and improve existing technologies, as well as develop new solutions in the field of electric power. Your role involves developing experimental test setups, managing and conducting experiments, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the electric power laboratory and providing technical support to researchers and engineers. You will collaborate with GE Aerospace and Advanced Research Centre technologists to innovate for the future and deliver on our commitment to sustainability, safety and quality for our customers while advancing future of flight.

Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru is our multidisciplinary research and engineering center. Engineers and scientists at JFWTC have contributed to hundreds of aviation patents, pioneering breakthroughs in engine technologies, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing.

Roles And Responsibilities

As a Research Specialist your responsibilities include but not limited to the following.

  • Research and Experimentation: You will Plan, design, and conduct experiments and research projects related to electric power systems. Investigate and evaluate new technologies, materials, and methodologies. Collaborate with cross-functional research teams and also facilities and EHS teams to achieve research goals.
  • Prototype Development: Design and develop prototypes of new electric power technologies and systems. Collaborate with engineers and technicians to build and test prototypes. Iterate on designs to optimize performance and efficiency.
  • Equipment and Lab Management: Ensure the proper functioning of lab equipment and instruments. Oversee maintenance and calibration of lab tools. Manage inventory and procure necessary Materials and components. Perform routine maintenance and calibration of lab equipment. Co-ordinate repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyze data from experiments, simulations, and field tests. Interpret research results and draw meaningful conclusions. Utilize data analysis tools and software to support research efforts.
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments, procedures, and results. Present research findings to internal teams and stakeholders.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to researchers and engineers. Assist in the setup and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
  • Train and mentor junior staff or students working in the lab.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of safety and associated records in the lab. Enforce a safe working environment and assist manager and safety staff in conducting regular safety audits. Participate in near miss and accident investigation.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of electric power systems, including electrical grounding of systems, design of cables for experiments, electrical layout of experiments, and arc flash analysis.
  • Knowledge of power electronics and control simulation and modeling tools.
  • Operational/ testing Knowledge of induction motors, DC generators, synchronous motors
  • Operational/ programming Knowledge of VFD, soft starters, servo motors drive (Panasonic Siemens etc.) and MPCB, TVS and protection systems etc.
  • Developing electrical drawings for control panels as per requirement. Design and build panels. Ability to work with vendors in building panels.
  • Good knowledge of tripping devices and interlocks, Switchgears – MCCB, ACB, contactors
  • Good knowledge on programable power supplies, transformer, and autotransformers
  • Good knowledge of programming PLC and use pf LabVIEW software data acquisition and controls.
  • Operational knowledge and safety aspects of High voltage operations
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and Hydraulics systems, heat exchangers, sensors like thermocouples, RTD, pressure, accelerometer
  • Able to use measuring instruments like DSO meggar, Hi-pot tester, impedance analuzer and hands on experience on different types of current and voltage probes,.
  • PCB design and layout
  • CAD design of panels and power converters
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
  • Able to lead the task in an environment involving multiple stake holders.Prior experience in electric power research and development is preferred.
  • Familiarity with software tools used in electrical system analysis is advantageous.
