Overview
- The successful candidate will be a production database-administration competency in our News
Technology Services / New Tech Infrastructure team and will take ownership of supporting the
Dow Jones/News UK / News Corp Australia/ Realtor corporate databases including
performance, reliability and security of data in a core database competency.
- The Oracle Database Administrator will be primarily experienced in Oracle RDBMS with
knowledge of Cloud technologies. Additionally, they’ll be involved in administration of
databases and their eco-systems; will support release, incident, problem, business continuity
management practices; will patch, upgrade and comply with audit controls; will continuously
improve database service quality to ensure stability and high availability. You are experienced in
implementing; securing, supporting and upgrading enterprise infrastructure, ensuring the
infrastructure, which runs corporate applications, are correctly monitored and highly available
as required.
- Candidates should have 4-7 years of experience in a DBA role and are expected to work in a
rotating 24 x 5 model and also provide on-call support as required by business.
- Knowledge of a second database technology which could be one of PostgreSQL will be an added
advantage.
- Candidates will need to possess working knowledge of Cloud technologies of AWS and Azure
including Compute (EC2, Auto Scaling, Lambda etc), Storage (S3, EFS, EBS etc.), Network (VPC,
ELB’s, Route 53 etc).
- Additionally, knowledge of MongoDB and No-SQL will be an added advantage.
- Preferable candidates will need to possess basic working knowledge of Cloud technologies -
AWS EC2 and RDS.
- Candidates are expected to work in a rotating 24 x 5 model and also provide on-call support as
required by business.
To ensure availability and security of the database infrastructure.
To manage the governance process for technical policy, standards and guidelines.

- Service Technologies
- To work on core database technologies in:
- Oracle - Database Concepts and administration.
- Basic knowledge of Cloud hosted DB technologies. Oracle on AWS-EC2/RDS.
Job Description
- Minimum of 4 to 7 years of experience working with Oracle, Postgres,Aurora PostgreSQL
and/or other databases.
- Should possess knowledge and concept of infrastructure and databases.
- Amazon AWS Database & RelatedTechnologies - RDS & EC2 hosted databases.
- Should have a reasonable understanding of AWS.
- Monitoring - Oracle OEM, SolarWinds, Script Based Tools
- HA & replication - Oracle Data Guard, Log Miner &RAC.
- Backup Solutions - Oracle RMAN, Datapump, Export/Import
- Amazon AWS Database & RelatedTechnologies - Oracle RDS (Desired)
- Core competency on Oracle 11g/12c/ 19c / Grid Control Database Administration.
- Certification in core competency preferred. (desired, but not required)
- Good understanding of AWS RDS and EC2 instances. (desired, but not required)
- Good understanding of platform O/S (Linux / Windows)
- Good Understanding of database / application interfaces ( SQL*Net, jdbc, odbc)
Responsibilties
- Database Management:
- Provide 24*7 support for production, development, and test databases.
- Be responsible for standard database administration duties: including, but not limited
to,installation, patching and change migration, monitoring, backup and recovery.Build, upgrade,
migrate and maintain databases.
- Administer, install, configure, and maintain Oracle databases (12c,19c,23c etc.) in both on-
premises and AWS environments.
- Installation, configuration and administration of data replication technologies: Data Guard,
Active Data Guard.
- Ensure database availability, reliability, and high performance through proactive monitoring,
maintenance, and optimization.
- Implement and support Oracle RAC (Real Application Clusters), Data Guard, and other high-
availability solutions.
- Cloud Database Administrations:
- Design, deploy, and manage Oracle databases hosted on AWS services, including Amazon RDS,
EC2, and S3.
- Utilize AWS-native tools like CloudWatch, RDS Monitoring, and Newrelic to monitor and
maintain cloud database environments.
- Assist with database migrations to the cloud (on-prem to AWS) and ensure smooth operations
in the cloud environment.
- Should have experience RDS/Aurora (cloud) database upgrades and patching with minimum
downtime (rolling upgrades/patches).
- Should have experience in migrating the databases using DMS,replication etc.
- Operational Responsibilities
- Responsible for maintaining services to agreed Service Levels through effective management
and communication to all parties.
- Responsible for alerting the Leadership team, Service managers and Business of any issues that
impact production or result in reduced resilience during a production period.
- Is involved in the maintenance and regular testing of tier 0 disaster recovery plans
- Ensuring that system failures are contained and resolved with minimum business impact and
that steps are taken to manage failures in IT delivery.
- To join the Incident Management team during major incidents.
- To ensure timely weekly preparation of brief management reports.
- Oversee changes to ensure minimal disruption and compliance with change processes.
- Provide timely participation in follow-on problem focus groups.
- Involved in updates for operational procedures and associated support documentation.
- To at all times follow and encourage ITIL best practice.
- Backup Recovery & Security Compliance:
- Use RMAN backup/recovery and deployment.
- Using RMAN, Oracle Data Pump, and proprietary AWS tools, prepare and implement solutions
for database backups and disaster recovery.
- Carrying out regular recovery tests and validations is a must to guarantee data integrity.
- Ensure proper database security measures are in place, including user management, encryption
etc.
- Apply the latest RU/PSU, security patches and updates for both on-prem and AWS-hosted
Oracle environments.
- Work with app team for upgrading the major and minor version for Oracle & Postgres.
- Maintain and review database audit trails to ensure compliance with organizational and
regulatory policies.
- Prepare reports on database security, user access, and system changes.
- Performance Tuning and Optimization:
- Monitor and tune Oracle database performance, including query optimization, indexing, and
SQL performance.
- Use tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), AWR/ASH reports, and CloudWatch for
database health monitoring.
- Perform capacity planning and resource optimization.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and implement solutions for continuous improvement.
- Database Health Checks:
- Regularly checks the system,OS,space,db logs and reports to proactively identify and resolve
potential issues
- Audit and Reporting:
- Maintain and review database audit trails to ensure compliance with organizational and
regulatory policies.
- Script and Automation:
- Write and maintain scripts for database automation (e.g., backup scripts, monitoring scripts,
health checks) using Shell, Python, or other scripting languages.
- Should have working on Devops tools like Terraform, or CloudFormation,Github, Jenkins to
automate database deployments.
- Work with application developers, infrastructure teams, and cloud architects to support
application performance, integrations, and deployments.
- Provide timely resolution for database-related incidents, track issues through ticketing systems,
and perform root cause analysis.
- Participate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical database issues.
