Job Description – Design & Development Engineer (Mechanical)

Job Summary

The role is responsible for the design and development of new styles as per inputs from Hong Kong (HK) and US Product Development (PD) teams, within assigned timelines. This position will manage SAP-related activities (Material Master creation, BOM creation for India-sourced SKUs & components), as well as interact with suppliers and global teams for sample development, corrections, and 3D modeling. The incumbent will play a critical role in ensuring first-time acceptance of samples, product costing, and design excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Excellence & Product Design

  • Lead New Product Development (NPD) from concept to design for manufacturing.
  • Convert design concepts/sketches into 3D models and generate detailed BOMs, drawings, and specifications.
  • Execute ECR/ECN processes and support design refinement based on reviews and stakeholder inputs.
  • Apply DFMEA & GD&T knowledge to ensure robust design and product reliability.

Product Costing

  • Prepare detailed BOMs & product costing for all new projects.
  • Work with suppliers for cost reduction, value analysis (VA), and value engineering (VE) initiatives.

Development & Vendor Management

  • Manage sample development (photo, salesman & technical samples) with a strong focus on first-time acceptance.
  • Collaborate with HK/US PD teams for timely component corrections and approvals.
  • Ensure quality improvement both at vendor end and in-house.
  • Daily interactions with global PD teams to address queries and feedback promptly.

SAP & Data Management

  • Create and maintain Material Master, BOM, and Info Records in SAP for all new projects.
  • Update sample status in Forrus and ensure accurate master data management.

Pilot Lot / Handover / PPAP

  • Conduct time studies and process balancing for new projects.
  • Support new process requirements (inspection, tools, fixtures, etc.) during pilot lot and sample making.
  • Track pilot lot quality improvements and ensure readiness for PPAP.

External & Internal Interfaces

  • External: Vendors, HK & US PD Teams
  • Internal: NPD Management Team, Cross-functional Teams

Job Requirements

Education

  • B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering – 4–5 years of experience
  • OR Diploma (Mechanical/Mechatronics) – 6–8 years of experience

Relevant Experience

  • At least 3–4 years of hands-on experience in SolidWorks (Design & Drafting) + AutoCAD
  • Strong experience in NPD processes, 3D modeling, BOM creation, product costing, ECR/ECN handling
  • Knowledge of sheet metal, cold forging, and injection molding tooling is a must
