The team
The Enforcement & Compliance Group (ECG) is one of ASICs largest and most influential groups, playing a central role in identifying, assessing and responding to misconduct across Australias financial system. ECG leads the full lifecycle of enforcement activity, from early inquiries and compliance assessments through to complex investigations and litigation, driving outcomes that protect consumers and strengthen trust in financial markets. Working closely with in‑house lawyers and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, ECG tackles diverse, fast‑paced and high‑stakes matters that have real impact for Australians every day.
Within ECG, Lawyers may work in one of two key teams:
- Enforcement Inquiries & Compliance (EIC) – EIC conducts early, targeted inquiries into reports of potential misconduct. These specialist teams rapidly assess risk, gather preliminary evidence and determine the most appropriate regulatory pathway. Their work spans sectors including scams, credit, banking and investment management, with a focus on triaging matters for referral to full investigation or resolving issues through compliance or regulatory action.
- Investigations (IEA) – IEA manages complex investigations into suspected breaches of financial services and corporations law. These teams analyse data, intelligence and evidentiary material, conduct compulsory examinations and interviews, prepare briefs for administrative, civil or criminal action, and support proceedings in State and Federal courts. Their work is strategic, detailed and central to ASICs enforcement capability, delivering outcomes with real impact across Australias financial system.
The role
As a
Lawyer (ASIC 3 or ASIC 4), you will use your legal expertise to help uncover, assess and respond to potential misconduct, contributing to matters that directly protect consumers and strengthen the financial system. - Use ASICs digital evidence management systems to analyse documents, data and intelligence, generating insights that inform enforcement decisions.
- Support the delivery of enforcement outcomes, assisting with civil litigation, criminal prosecutions and administrative actions while applying the law thoughtfully to all aspects of ECGs work.
ASIC 3 roles focus more on foundational legal and investigative support, while ASIC 4 roles include higher complexity and greater independence in legal analysis, evidence assessment and case strategy.
