Job Description

The Associate Medical Coder plays a critical role in the healthcare industry by ensuring the accurate translation of patient data into standardized codes used for billing, reporting, and data analysis. This position requires a keen attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of medical terminology and coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS. The individual in this role supports the clinical team by reviewing patient records, verifying code assignments, and ensuring compliance with established guidelines and regulations. Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze medical records to assign accurate diagnostic and procedure codes.
  • Ensure compliance with coding rules and guidelines established by both the organization and regulatory entities.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses and patient records.
  • Create, maintain, and distribute coding-related documentation and reports to relevant stakeholders.
  • Assist billing and collections with questions related to coding and documentation issues.
  • Attend coding training and educational seminars to stay current with codes and regulations.
  • Utilize electronic health record systems to access patient information for accurate coding application.
  • Identify and report discrepancies and trends affecting coding accuracy and billing efficiency.
  • Implement coding best practices and improvements as part of continuous quality assurance efforts.
  • Provide coding assistance and guidance to other medical support staff as needed.
  • Assist in periodic audits to ensure coding accuracy and adherence to standards.
  • Support clinical research and quality reporting initiatives through accurate data collection and code assignment.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or higher in Health Information Management or related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or similar credential preferred.
  • Proficiency in medical coding systems, including ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately review and analyze information.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact effectively with medical professionals.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Experience with electronic health records systems and medical coding software preferred.
