Job Description

A Lab Assistant – Pathology plays a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of a pathology laboratory. This position is ideal for individuals with a keen interest in medical research and diagnostics. The Lab Assistant is responsible for preparing, organizing, and assisting in various laboratory tasks under the guidance of a pathologist or laboratory manager. They are integral in ensuring that laboratory processes run smoothly and efficiently, aiding in the accurate testing and analysis of samples. Their work is important for the successful diagnosis and treatment planning in healthcare. An individual in this role should be diligent, detail-oriented, and possess the ability to handle and document specimens with the utmost care and attention. In addition to technical skills, excellent communication and organizational capabilities are necessary to coordinate effectively within the lab team and with other medical staff.


Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing laboratory equipment and solutions for pathology testing.
  • Collect, label, and store biological specimens such as blood, tissues, and bodily fluids.
  • Operate basic lab instruments and equipment following standard procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Document and record laboratory results accurately for analysis by pathologists or medical staff.
  • Coordinate the disposal of hazardous materials and waste according to safety guidelines.
  • Assist in monitoring and managing laboratory supplies and inventory effectively.
  • Support pathologists in preparing and analyzing histological and cytological samples.
  • Communicate laboratory procedures and results effectively to medical staff as required.
  • Participate in quality control processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of lab results.
  • Adhere to confidentiality policies regarding patient information and laboratory findings.
  • Provide assistance in the training and orientation of new laboratory staff as needed.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent qualification is generally required.
  • Completion of a Lab Assistant or related program from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with pathology lab procedures, equipment, and safety standards is necessary.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision in handling samples and documentation.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or within a team environment.
  • Good communication skills for effective interaction with medical staff and pathologists.
