Job Description

A Medical Coder plays a crucial role in the healthcare industry by ensuring accurate and efficient coding of patient records for insurance claims, billing, and data management. They are responsible for translating healthcare diagnoses, procedures, services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. This position requires a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, along with a high level of precision and attention to detail. Medical coders work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to maintain accurate patient records and support seamless healthcare operations. A strong knowledge of the latest coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS is essential for this role to ensure compliance and optimize reimbursement processes.


Responsibilities

  • Translate complex medical diagnoses and procedures into industry-standard codes for record-keeping.
  • Ensure that all codes are assigned with a high degree of accuracy and consistency.
  • Review medical documents and reports to verify the completeness and accuracy of the data recorded.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify information and achieve precise coding requirements.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all health information privacy regulations.
  • Manage and update medical coding databases and systems regularly to prevent errors.
  • Analyze patient information to identify any pending or required medical procedures accurately.
  • Assist in the development of practice policies and procedures related to coding and compliance.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs to stay up-to-date with coding standards.
  • Conduct audits of coding processes to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
  • Generate reports related to billing requirements and coding errors for management review.
  • Act as a resource for coding queries and provide support to healthcare staff as needed.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent educational qualification.
  • Certification as a Professional Coder (CPC) or a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
  • In-depth understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology is essential.
  • Proficiency in using coding systems such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and health information software.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with healthcare professionals.
