Job Description

A Kitchen Steward, often referred to as a Kitchen Helper or Dishwasher, plays a crucial role in the smooth operation of a restaurant or food service establishment. The primary responsibility of a Kitchen Steward is to ensure that the kitchen, including all cooking apparatus, dishes, and utensils, remains clean and organized at all times. Working under the supervision of the kitchen manager or head chef, the Kitchen Steward contributes significantly to maintaining hygiene standards. This role requires the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced and often physically demanding environment. The Kitchen Steward supports the rest of the kitchen staff by ensuring that all equipment and surfaces are sanitized and ready for use, which directly impacts the quality and speed of service that a guest experiences.


Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize all kitchen surfaces, including walls, floors, and counters regularly.
  • Wash, dry, and store dishes, utensils, pots, and pans using proper technique.
  • Organize and maintain cleanliness in storage areas, including refrigerators and freezers.
  • Ensure that all kitchen trash is disposed of in a timely and sanitary manner.
  • Assist in the preparation of food items as directed by the chef or kitchen manager.
  • Perform regular inventory checks and report any shortages to the kitchen manager.
  • Keep track of cleaning supplies and notify manager when more are needed.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment, ensuring tools are in good condition.
  • Support kitchen staff in organizing and unpacking new stock deliveries.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations to ensure a secure kitchen environment.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down kitchen stations at the start and end of shifts.
  • Provide general support and assistance to other kitchen professionals as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience in kitchen duties is advantageous but not essential.
  • Ability to work standing for long periods in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure cleanliness and hygiene standards are met.
  • Good organizational skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Basic understanding of English to follow instructions and safety protocols.
  • A positive attitude and ability to work well in a team setting.
