Job Description

An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurse is a vital part of any hospital's critical care team. These highly specialized nurses provide constant care and monitoring for patients with life-threatening conditions in the ICU. They must possess a high level of expertise and capability, as they work in fast-paced environments where decisions need to be made quickly and accurately. They play a critical role in managing and observing patients' vital signs, administering medication, and performing treatments. ICU Nurses must exercise exceptional judgement, communication, and empathy in order to deliver the best care possible to patients and their families. With their unique skill set, ICU Nurses bridge the gap between life and death, ensuring patients receive meticulous care to facilitate recovery or to provide dignified palliative care.


Responsibilities

  • Monitor and assess critically ill patients' conditions on a continual basis.
  • Administer medications and intravenous infusions with precision and care.
  • Collaborate with physicians and medical professionals for designing patient care plans.
  • Operate and manage ICU-specific medical equipment and technology.
  • Document patient symptoms, progress, and response to treatment in detailed reports.
  • Implement emergency procedures and treatments during life-threatening situations.
  • Conduct physical examinations and diagnostic tests to evaluate patient health.
  • Educate patients and their families about ongoing care, treatments, and procedures.
  • Uphold sterile and safe environments against infection in critical care settings.
  • Adhere strictly to healthcare regulations and hospital policies at all times.
  • Maintain compassionate communication with patients' families about patient conditions.
  • Support patients emotionally to help them cope with high stress levels.

Requirements

  • Experience in an ICU or critical care environment for at least one year.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or equivalent education.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.
  • Strong knowledge of intensive care procedures and medical equipment operation.
  • Excellent critical thinking and decision-making capabilities under pressure.
  • Proficient in electronic medical records and healthcare documentation software.
