Job Description

The role of a Staff Nurse in the Operating Theatre (OT) is both challenging and rewarding, providing an essential service to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The Staff Nurse is a crucial member of the surgical team, ensuring the smooth operation of the OT while delivering high-quality patient care. They are responsible for preparing patients for surgery, assisting during the operation, and providing immediate post-operative care. This position requires a compassionate professional with strong clinical skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The Staff Nurse (OT) must have excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals. Additionally, maintaining patient safety, hygiene, and a sterile environment are paramount responsibilities in this role.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating room and ensure sterilization of instruments and equipment.
  • Assist surgeons during operations by handing instruments and monitoring patient vitals.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort before, during, and after surgery procedures.
  • Monitor and document patient's condition and responses throughout surgery.
  • Coordinate with surgical team members to ensure efficient workflow in the OT.
  • Administer prescribed medications and intravenous fluids during surgical operations.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulations, and quality standards.
  • Ensure availability and functionality of required surgical supplies and tools.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior nursing staff and students as necessary.
  • Manage emergency situations during surgery with calmness and efficiency.
  • Facilitate patient transfer from OT to recovery room post-surgery safely.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records and surgical documentation.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse with a valid nursing license and OT experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, procedures, and aseptic techniques.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment under time pressures.
  • Excellent organizational abilities and effective communication skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle emergencies and act calmly under pressure.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends if needed.
