Staff Software Engineer Backend

Toast is looking for a Staff Software Engineer (Backend) to join our Partner Connect team in Bangalore, which owns how everything outside Toast connects to Toast. That includes the event infrastructure every team at Toast uses to publish data, the frameworks partners and customers use to integrate through our APIs, and a new charter to make Toast the source of truth for all the data about the customers we serve. 

You will play a role in evolving our architecture to support ever more complex new features and best-in-class monitoring as we scale to orders of magnitude of our current size!

A day in the life (Responsibilities)

• Be a part of team working collaboratively with UX, PM, QA and other engineers building web applications using modern web technologies 
• Design the systems that make app development automated, self-serve, and fast, including sandbox provisioning and a clean path to production.
• Define best practices and help choose technologies to evolve our current tech stack while writing world-class applications
• Championing best practices such as quality integration and unit testing
• Provide design feedback and participate in code reviews to ensure implementations meet requirements
• Ensure that all work done by the team is delivered with quality and is appropriately monitored and supported in production
• Raise the technical bar through architecture, design review, and code review, and mentor engineers across levels as the team grows.
• Use AI tools in your own workflow and help establish how the team uses them well, including how to critically evaluate what they produce.

What youll need to thrive (Requirements)

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)
• 10+ years of experience building backend systems and APIs
• Proficient in Java, Kotlin or other object oriented languages
• Experience designing platform APIs that other teams depend on - platform thinking, not just feature delivery
• In-depth understanding of AWS, microservices, distributed systems, and enterprise messaging.
• The ability to break down a problem, understand what the consuming team actually needs, and ship a clean solution. Our users are other engineers, and the ergonomics of the platform matter
• Proficient with traditional databases. Comfort with document-based or columnar data stores a plus
• Prior experience with distributed systems, enterprise messaging systems or microservices
