The Physical Stores Payment team at Amazon is seeking a talented Software Development Engineer to help build the future of retail payments. Our team builds innovative payment solutions behind innovative experiences like Just Walk Out technology, where AI, computer vision, and sophisticated payment systems work in harmony to enable friction-less shopping. Were not just processing transactions – were reimagining how payments work in physical spaces across Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, and other retail formats that are transforming the way people shop.

As a Software Development Engineer, youll be developing next-generation payment technologies, working on everything from cloud-enabled services to on-device payment solutions. Youll have the opportunity to experiment with innovative retail technologies, including our latest experiments into generative AI for predictive payment patterns and systems that autonomously handle complex payment scenarios in physical spaces. Our team is building new approaches to payment acceptance, processor integrations, and risk management that are entirely new in the industry.

Youll join a team of experienced Engineers who are constantly pushing the boundaries of whats possible in physical retail. Whether youre building systems that process millions of transactions, developing new payment experiences that feel like magic to customers, or experimenting with autonomous payment agents that can adapt to real-world scenarios, youll be working on technology that directly shapes the future of retail. This role offers unique opportunities to solve complex technical challenges while working with some of the most sophisticated payment and Automation systems in the industry.

Key job responsibilities

• Design and develop cloud-native payment services for Just Walk Out stores and other physical retail formats
• Implement secure payment integrations with multiple processors and payment methods
• Develop real-time payment risk assessment and fraud prevention features
• Write clean, maintainable code with comprehensive test coverage
• Contribute to system architecture and technical design discussions
• Debug and optimize payment services across distributed systems
• Build monitoring and alerting for business-critical payment services
• Participate in on-call rotation to support production systems
• Document technical solutions and share knowledge with team members
  
  

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
• 3+ years of Video Games Industry (supporting title Development, Release, or Live Ops) experience
• Experience programming with at least one software programming language
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
• Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent
