Position Summary
We are looking for a Mid-Level Backend Engineer to help build the backend services powering a payments-focused Dispute Management Platform. The engineer will work with the Senior Lead Backend Engineer and product team to develop Python APIs, PostgreSQL data models, Azure services, integrations, background jobs, and business logic supporting dispute and chargeback operations. This is a hands-on development position for an engineer comfortable building reliable backend applications and interested in working on a payments platform with complex workflows and data relationships.

Key Responsibilities
Python Backend Development
Develop maintainable and well-tested Python backend services.
Implement REST API endpoints based on product and frontend requirements.
Follow established backend architecture, coding standards, API conventions, and security practices.
Participate in peer code reviews and technical design discussions.
Troubleshoot application issues and contribute to production support.
Dispute Management
Develop APIs and backend business logic for dispute creation, case updates, dispute statuses, merchant/MID association, network reason codes, case assignment, evidence deadlines, analyst flags, search and filtering, comments, timeline events, activity history, and notifications.
Implement validation and workflow rules so cases cannot transition into invalid states.
Evidence Services
Build functionality for evidence checklists, evidence states, notes, uploads, attachment metadata, retrieval, reminders, evidence packages, and secure file access.
Integrate backend services with Azure-based file storage where required.
PostgreSQL Development
Create and maintain PostgreSQL tables, relationships, indexes, views, and migrations.
Write performant SQL queries and work with relational entities including disputes, merchants, evidence, users, comments, activities, notifications, alerts, automation rules, compliance events, and reports.
Maintain referential integrity, assist with query-performance analysis, and support schema changes through controlled database migrations.
Ensure APIs include appropriate validation, authentication, authorization, error handling, logging, rate-limit handling, and documentation.
Payment & Prevention Integrations
Assist with integrations between the platform and external payment/dispute systems.
Consume third-party APIs, process inbound webhooks, map external data into internal schemas, handle credentials securely, implement retries and duplicate prevention, log integration events, handle failures, and support reconciliation.
Prevention Alerts
Develop services for prevention-alert ingestion, alert queues, response deadlines, auto-refund actions, evidence requests, escalations, resolutions, duplicate detection, and fee-avoidance calculations.
Automation Rules
Implement configurable automation rules including triggers, actions, merchant/MID scope, portfolio scope, active/paused states, automatic vs. review modes, guardrails, execution, run history, success/failure tracking, and savings calculations.
Merchant & Compliance Data
Develop APIs and SQL queries for merchant health, chargeback ratios, processing volume, win rates, alert counts, historical trends, compliance thresholds, compliance status, portfolio KPIs, fee exposure, and root-cause analytics.
Assist with background processes used to calculate and refresh these metrics.
Reporting
Implement services for scheduled and on-demand reports, CSV/XLSX exports, report histories, scheduling, recipient management, and operational/compliance extracts.
Develop asynchronous processes for reports or data jobs that should not execute synchronously through API requests.
Azure Development
Deploy and maintain backend services within the established Azure architecture using Azure-hosted Python applications, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Blob Storage, Key Vault, Service Bus, Functions or container-based services, Azure Monitor, and Application Insights as applicable.
Participate in deployments through CI/CD pipelines across development, QA/UAT, and production environments.
Security & Auditability
Implement backend controls supporting role-based permissions, secure authentication, SSO/MFA-compatible workflows, session security, data redaction, retention, audit logs, API-rate controls, and secure handling of secrets and credentials.
Maintain detailed logging for sensitive case and automation actions.
Testing & Quality
Write unit tests for backend business logic and integration tests for APIs and database operations.
Test external integration failure scenarios, participate in regression testing and defect resolution, maintain technical documentation, and troubleshoot services using Azure observability tools.
Required Qualifications
3-5 years of professional software engineering experience.
2+ years of backend development experience using Python.
Strong SQL skills.
Experience working with PostgreSQL or another enterprise relational database.
Experience developing REST APIs and understanding relational database design.
Familiarity with Git-based development workflows.
Experience writing unit and integration tests.
Experience with cloud-based application development.
Familiarity with Docker/containerized applications.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work within an established architecture while contributing technical recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
Microsoft Azure experience.
FastAPI experience.
SQLAlchemy and Alembic experience.
Azure Database for PostgreSQL experience.
Azure Service Bus or similar message-queue experience.
Experience with third-party APIs and webhooks.
Fintech or payment-processing experience.
Chargeback/dispute-management experience.
Experience with event-driven systems and background-job processing.
Familiarity with payment-data security practices.
What Success Looks Like
The Backend Engineer II will consistently deliver reliable backend functionality that turns product requirements into production services. The engineer should be able to independently own defined backend features - from PostgreSQL schema and Python business logic through APIs, automated tests, and Azure deployment - while working within the architecture established by the Senior Lead Backend Engineer.
