The Safety Engineer is responsible for building and leading a zero?harm culture and ensuring legal and customer compliance in a complex, automotive?grade production environment. You will design and run comprehensive EHS systems, risk assessments, machine safety upgrades, LOTO, permit?to?work, contractor management, emergency response, and training & competency programs. You’ll partner closely with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering to prevent incidents and continuously improve TRIR/LTIR, near?miss reporting, audit scores, and compliance status.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy, Governance & Culture
Own the site EHS strategy, policy, and objectives; align with corporate frameworks and legal requirements.
Establish an operating cadence: daily safety huddles, Tier boards for SQDCP, monthly EHS reviews, and leadership Gemba walks.
Drive a proactive reporting culture (near?misses, hazards) and recognition for safe behaviours.
Risk Assessment & Controls
Lead and maintain HIRA/Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for all stations: winding, forming, laser welding, impregnation/curing, rotor assembly, press fits, balancing, leak testing, and EOL HV test cells.
Ensure robust machine guarding, interlocks, light curtains, emergency stops, and validated safety PLC logic where applicable.
Implement LOTO standards for electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and thermal energy; verify through routine field audits.
Manage magnet safety (pinch points, strong magnetic fields), rotating equipment guarding, and hot work permitting.
High Voltage (HV) & Electrical Safety
Define and enforce procedures for hipot, insulation resistance, partial discharge, and run?in test areas; control access via zoning and authorization.
Maintain arc?flash and shock risk assessments, selection of PPE, and safe approach boundaries; ensure test equipment calibration and interlock integrity.
Ergonomics & Material Handling
Conduct ergonomic risk assessments for repetitive tasks (winding, assembly, inspection); deploy lift assists, turntables, and workstation design improvements.
Oversee material handling for heavy parts (stators/rotors), magnet handling fixtures, and pallet/jig safety.
Contractor & Project Safety
Run contractor safety management: pre?qualification, site induction, PTW, supervision, and daily toolbox talks.
Oversee CapEx installs/commissioning (robots, vision systems, ovens, laser cells) with construction safety plans and FAT/SAT EHS criteria.
Compliance, Audits & Documentation
Ensure compliance with internal standards and applicable laws/regulations; maintain licenses/permits (e.g., hazardous chemicals, waste, fire).
Lead internal/external EHS audits, customer audits, and statutory inspections; close findings with sustainable actions.
Own EHS document control: policies, SOPs, SOP for LOTO, chemical registers, SDS, training records, incident logs, and emergency drills.
Incident Management & Continuous Improvement
Lead investigations using 5?Why, Fishbone, TapRooT (if applicable); implement corrective/preventive actions and verify effectiveness.
Track and reduce TRIR, LTIR, first aid cases, near?miss to hazard closure time, and environmental excursions.
Facilitate Kaizen on safety improvements; integrate EHS requirements in DFM/DFA, PFMEA, and change management (MOC).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Electronics or Computer Science Engineering.
5+ years of Hands?on with machine safety, HV/electrical safety, chemical/resin safety, and automated line environments.
Strong command of risk assessments (HIRA/JSA), LOTO, permit?to?work, incident investigation, contractor safety, and emergency response.
Proven track record driving improvements in TRIR/LTIR, audit scores, and compliance closure.
Excellent communication, stakeholder management and decision making under ambiguity
