About the role
About the xAPI Product Team
xAPI is Tesco’s aggregation and orchestration GraphQL gateway powering our online and in‑store customer experiences. It enables all our client applications—Grocery Home Shopping (Web & App), Clubcard, Payment flows, Store digital experiences and more—to access consistent, performant, and secure data from across the Retail Platform.
The xAPI team works across the full lifecycle of platform products, solving complex technical problems, shaping API capabilities, collaborating with engineering and downstream service teams, and enabling end‑to‑end retail journeys.
As an APM, you will contribute to a core platform used every minute by millions of customers.
The Role - Associate Product Manager - xAPI
As an APM, you will support senior PMs and engineers in delivering the business & platform roadmap for Tesco’s GraphQL gateway. You’ll manage the product backlog, help define requirements, coordinate with internal clients, and ensure we deliver customer‑centred, robust API capabilities.
This is a learning‑focused role: perfect for someone early in their PM career who is eager to build strong platform, API, and stakeholder‑management skills.
Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:
Keep the product backlog organised, prioritised, and groomed; write clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
Learn and apply agile product management practices across Scrum.
Understand how GraphQL and APIs enable Tesco experiences; work with engineers to translate client needs into platform capabilities.
Perform risk and issue management planning, identification, analysis, responses, monitoring and control on the platform to minimise the risks and incidents, increase the responsiveness and platform availability.
Coordinate with internal client teams (Online UI, API teams such as Fulfilment, Payments, Customer Order etc.) to understand needs and ensure smooth integration with xAPI.
Maintain up‑to‑date documentation (API specs, guidelines, release notes) in GitHub and Confluence
Collaborate with QA and engineering to support automation and testing best practices.
Ensure compliance with GDPR, security, and internal platform standards.
Act as an advocate for the xAPI platform and help clients understand best practices and constraints.
Key Skills and Experience
You don’t need to be an expert—just strong fundamentals and curiosity. The ideal candidate will have:
Required
Foundational understanding of APIs, GraphQL concepts (queries, mutations, schemas), and how client applications use backend data.
Exposure to or interest in distributed systems, API gateways, or platform products.
Ability to break down complex problems and propose structured, pragmatic solutions.
Strong organisational and analytical skills; ability to manage multiple inputs and keep teams aligned.
Clear, adaptable communication skills—comfortable working with engineering, design, and business stakeholders.
Ability to learn quickly, ask the right questions, and work independently when needed.
Bachelor’s degree in a technical, analytical, or business field (Computer Science/IT preferred but not mandatory).
Nice to Have
Experience writing user stories, acceptance criteria, or working in agile teams.
Familiarity with GitHub, API documentation tools, or GraphQL development tools (e.g., Apollo, GraphiQL).
Personal
Flexibility, ability to plan and organise, responsiveness, creativity, self-starter.
Able to build solid working relationships with the product teams, design, optimisation teams and engineering, peers and senior leadership.
Curious, proactive personality with the positive approach to learning and constant challenges.
Ability to demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organisation.
Comfortable with ambiguity and able to bring structure to evolving problem spaces.
Customer and outcome‑obsessed; motivated to enable seamless retail journeys.
A team player who values continuous improvement and integrity.
