The Team Lead / Consultant - Corrosion & Materials will lead the delivery of materials engineering consultancy services to the internal Wood business units and to Wood’s external client base. This role is primarily based in Wood offices but may also require on-site support, both onshore and offshore.

Role

Roles in this team are crucial for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of engineering projects and will typically support the following specialist areas:

  • Corrosion & Material Selection: Providing expert advice and solutions to avoid and manage corrosion-related problems in new projects or modifications to existing facilities.
  • Cathodic Protection (CP): Develop, review and specifiy cathodic protection systems in new projects or modifications to existing facilities.

The key high-level aspects of the role are as follows:

  • A technical specialist, capable applying advanced engineering concepts to unique engineering problems, typically requires more than 10 years progressively more responsible pertinent experience.
  • Uses advanced technical knowledge to perform engineering assignments and produce engineering deliverables including complex problems and to complete any project tasks with minimal guidance and direction.
  • Serves as the Lead Engineer or the project Technical Authority on projects and holds advanced level specialisation in one or more areas of the materials discipline (i.e. corrosion, coatings, welding, CP).
  • Reviews and manages complex projects within area of expertise or of a multidisciplinary nature.
  • Generally directs highly qualified professionals engaged in complex engineering projects.
  • Has authority for a portfolio of consulting projects, managing and providing technical direction and guidance, managing client relationship and project team engagement, with responsibility for cost, schedule, resource allocation and risk.

Specialist level of competence in one or more of the following specialist areas:

  • Corrosion & Material Selection
  • Corrosion Management Strategy development and application.
  • Material Selection Assessment / Reporting.
  • Corrosion Monitoring and Risk Assessment.
  • Corrosion Modelling Studies.
  • Coating Design and Specification - Onshore and Offshore.
  • Development of materials section of Specifications for Valves.
  • Cathodic Protection (CP)
  • Cathodic Protection Integrity Assessments - Onshore/Offshore pipelines, equipment and structures.
  • Cathodic Protection (CP) field work, TR/test point checks, potential measurements.
  • Cathodic Protection (CP) onshore system installation, installing & commissioning test points, anode beds, TR units, monitoring stations.
  • Cathodic Protection Design - Offshore Pipeline & Facilities.
  • Cathodic Protection Design - Onshore Pipeline & Facilities.
  • AC mitigation Design - Onshore Pipeline.

Responsibilities

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

Definition and approval of technical scopes

  • Assists in establishing project aims and outcomes to contribute to the development of a comprehensive project design.
  • Evaluates current procedures and recommends changes to improve the efficiency of planning and scheduling projects.
  • Makes recommendations on project organization requirements, work methods and procedures and technical innovations by devising practical and economical solutions to problems in own or various engineering disciplines.

Executing assigned scopes of work.

  • Supervises and participates in delivery of complex engineering tasks.
  • Formulates and directs investigations or prototype, model and system studies, evaluating and interpreting the data obtained and recommending practical application of results.
  • Contributes to successful project completion by participating in the resolution of issues such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of standard materials, and complex coordination requirements.
  • Coordinates implementation of design engineering solutions.
  • Reviews project-related documentation to ensure accuracy.
  • Supervises complex engineering tasks related to a portion of a major project.
  • Work consists of complex procedures and tasks where diagnostic ability is required to assess the situation and identify appropriate actions to follow.
  • Assignments cover broad and complex subject matter where issues and factors may be characterized by unusual demands and require additional evaluation to establish the nature and scope of the problem.
  • Participate in incident investigations as required.
  • Assesses work against standards, aims and specifications.
  • Adhere to and comply with relevant discipline specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Management of key stakeholders in the execution and delivery of contracted activities.
  • Organising, active participation and occasional leading of design reviews.

Providing technical expertise

  • Provide expert technical advice and develop innovative engineering methods to solve complex problems and optimize project outcomes.
  • Perform the role of Technical Authority when appointed to do so.
  • Provides expert advice on design processes or construction methods.
  • Evaluates options and selects technical solutions that optimises technical and financial success.
  • Acts as technical custodian for low to medium value bids and proposals.
  • Provides awareness of technical advancements and new ways to serve customer needs.
  • Helps to establish a culture of technical excellence through role modelling and communicating expectations.
  • Undertakes Technical Bid Evaluation for subcontracted scopes and may have oversight of vendors.

Contributing to business growth.

  • Contributes to business development through regular engagement, relationship building and delivery to clients, as well as seeking opportunities to expand scope of work for Wood.
  • Contributes to engineering bids and proposals.

Manage And Supervise Others

  • Responsible for supervising technical specialists or engineers responsible for complex technical tasks.
  • Provides technical guidance and direction to teams of professional and non-professional staff.
  • Outlines requirements, assigns tasks, and supervises progress to ensure that targets and specifications are being met.
  • Provides technical direction to project team members.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring for direct reports.
  • Monitor compliance with competence standards.
  • Participates in recruitment, selection, transfers and promotion of resources to meet succession and business plans.
  • Support the development and retention of motivated and competent people.
  • Manages performance of direct reports.
  • Supporting and supervising tasks delegated to direct reports / respective team.
  • Manage and direct resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage multiple small to medium sized projects, with responsibility for cost, risk and resource allocation.
  • Supervises delivery of subcontracted design engineering.
  • Provides appropriate HSSE leadership including compliance with site and office safety requirements and technical/design safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors (minimum) or Masters (desirable) Degree in engineering discipline.
  • Chartership or relevant professional engineer status accredited by a national or industry engineering institution preferred.
  • Demonstratable CPD record showing examples of technical and consulting development.
  • For roles in Cathodic Protection, qualifications comparable to NACE CP specialist or ISO 15257-2017, Level 4 and 5 (desirable).

  • Ability to broadly interpret principles, theories, and concepts of an engineering specialty.
  • Possess a good knowledge of the various Business Units, Functions, Sectors and services offered within business area, a general understanding of other Wood business offerings and some ability to network and connect internal stakeholders.
  • Has a in depth understanding of Woods business position and commercial objectives, is able to implement recommend improvements to those commercial objectives. Understands and can manage technical and commercial risk.
